Dog Adoption Month in Southern Maryland

October is Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month so we rounded up a few of our favorite Southern Maryland animal shelters that we’re proud to support this month and all year long.

Animal Relief Fund

Hollywood, MD

ARF is a non-profit organization dedicated to finding homes for abandoned animals.  Their small network of foster homes are in Southern Maryland, and the organization hosts Adoption Days every Saturday at the Well Pet Clinic in Lexington Park, MD from 11am to 2pm.

St. Mary’s Animal Welfare League

Leonardtown, MD

SMAWL is working to help the homeless, abused and neglected animals in our local community through aggressive campaigns to find homes for homeless cats and dogs and to curb pet overpopulation through Spay/Neuter programs.

Tri-County Animal Shelter

Serving Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s Counties, the Tri-County Animal Shelter places adoptable dogs in homes and in some cases, works with rescue partners to assist in finding pets their forever homes.

Rescue Angels of Southern Maryland

Rescue Angels of Southern Maryland, Inc. is a non-profit organization, whose mission is to change the lives of animals in need by rescuing them from undesirable situations, providing loving homes, and any needed medical care. Once mostly focused on working with feral cats, they implemented a dog adoption program earlier this year.

Best Southern Maryland Dog Parks

John G. Lancaster Park

21550 Willows Road, Lexington Park, MD 20653

This park features a new dog park complete with one large dog run and one small dog run, water available on site, and waste disposal bags.

Myrtle Point Park

24050 Patuxent Blvd. California, MD 20619

This isn’t a true off-leash dog park, but your dog will love to explore (on-leash) the 192 acres featuring hiking trails and a beach area!

Turkey Hill & White Plains Dog Parks

White Plains, MD and St. Charles, MD

Both one-acre parks have two separate fenced-in areas, benches, a picnic pavilion, a message bulletin board and plastic pick-up bags.
